Joseph Bolen, Ph.D.

Dr. Joseph (Joe) Bolen is an Entrepreneur Partner at MPM BioImpact and the Chief Scientific Innovation Officer at ReNAgade Therapeutics. He is the former Chief Scientific Officer at PureTech Health. Joe has more than 45 years of industry and research experience and has been at the forefront of cancer and immunology research.

Joe oversaw most recently all aspects of research and development for Moderna Therapeutics as President R&D and Chief Scientific Officer. Previously, he was Chief Scientific Officer at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and Global Head of Oncology Research at Takeda Pharmaceutical Company. Prior to joining Millennium in 1999, Dr. Bolen held senior R&D positions at Hoechst Marion Roussel, Schering-Plough (DNAX) and Bristol Myers Squibb. He began his career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he contributed to the discovery of a class of proteins known as tyrosine kinase oncogenes as key regulators of the immune system.

Joe earned a Ph.D. in immunology and conducted his postdoctoral training in molecular virology at Kansas State University Cancer Center. He graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BS degree in microbiology and chemistry.
